MELBOURNE | You know how sometimes you stumble across a venue that you’ve never noticed before, and wonder how that’s the case? Well Honey Bar fit that bill for us the first time we found it while looking for a late Friday night drink in South Melbourne when everywhere we actually wanted to go was already closed. With a license that sees them open until 1am during the week, and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights, Honey Bar provides a great option at a time when there aren’t many in this part of town.

The venue is modernish – the kind of place that was super modern ten years ago and hasn’t aged too badly. There’s a sizeable bar, a good bar section with lots of seating options, and a function space upstairs. Drinks wise there’s a decent selection of mostly local wines, and beers contain a mixture of commercial brews and craftier options from breweries like Quiet Deeds, Murrays, and 4 Pines. The cocktails are our favourite thing here – there’s lots of variety and they’re always tasty. We especially love the Strawberry Caipirinha, which contains Cachaça, Rubis Strawberry Liqueur, muddled lime, strawberries & a dash of sugar syrup. Simple, fresh, and tasty. The friendly, chatty staff are always happy to make something off menu too, and we’ve often happily played guinea pig to some new in-progress cocktails over a few visits.

The food menu features an assortment of modern Australian dishes and pub favourites like salads, pasta, burgers and the like. Think squid with carrot purée, chorizo crumb, paprika, and chilli, BBQ brisket with creamed corn, smoked yoghurt, and blistered vine tomatoes, and pan-fried Blue Eye, with caponata, chive & ricotta croquettes, and fennel purée. Those with a sweet tooth might want to try the deep fried vanilla cheesecake, passionfruit curd. We’ve not, but it certainly sounds interesting.

Honey doesn’t put itself out there as being anything but a great local’s bar that gets the important things right, and with a nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and top drinks, we’re happy to say it delivers on that promise.
