Jacket Bar, Thornbury

MELBOURNE | When musician, Tamer Taşkaya, set out to open his own bar, music was his starting point. He teamed up with musicians and architects, Emily Crocker and Jack Monte of Studio Heck, to help turn his ideas into reality, and Jacket Bar was born.

It’s a small venue, featuring wood-panelled walls, cork floors, repurposed furniture, and vintage trinkets. Loaned artworks (soon to be replaced by pieces created by local artists) adorn the walls. Continue past the bar, and you’ll find a cosy outdoor courtyard.

While ostensibly a jazz bar, Jacket features live music from musicians from the local community that veers into other genres. One night there might be jazz, the other you might find a DJ spinning soul records, or flamenco. The same goes for the playlist when there’s no live music on. You can come to Jacket specifically for the music, but it’s not a place where you’re made to feel intimidated if you just want to chat with your friends and passively listen to the music in the background, either.

The drinks list is concise, featuring a few local beers and Guinness on tap, a diverse selection of wine by the glass, and cocktails. There’s good versions of the classics, along with house cocktails and twists on the classics, made using house infusions that you’ll see doing their thing on jars that are dotted around the venue.
