RUTHERGLEN | Jones Winery & Vineyard is one of the oldest and smallest wineries in Victoria and dates back to 1860. The winery has 10 hectares of vines, some of which were planted in 1905. The winery has been in the Jones family since 1927, and is currently owned and run by the brother and sister team of Arthur Jones and Mandy Jones.

The vines are planted on very old quartz, loam and alluvial red clays, and are irrigated until they are 5 years old, from which time they are left on their own to develop the regional character that the wines are known for. Jones offers a wide variety of wines, with grapes such as malbec, marsanne, fiano, pedro ximenies, durif, shiraz, grenache and Rutherglen brown muscat all being grown. They their particularly unique and delicious rose.

The wines are designed to be full flavoured and enjoyed with food, and Jones Winery offers one of the best dining options in town. Mandy actually spent 14 years in France and, along with perfecting her wine making skills, also studied gastronomy at Le Cordon Bleu. The French inspired restaurant, which adjoins the wine tasting area, is a homely space offering seasonal dishes with local produce such as French onion soup, boeuf bourgignon, croque monsieur and goat’s cheese salad. We ate lunch here when we visited and were very happy with our meal, particularly the divine croque monsieur and Rhubarb pie.

If dining inside doesn’t appeal, the winery will put together a picnic hamper for you with 24 hours notice, which you can take away and enjoy in the beautiful surrounds of Rutherglen.
