CHICAGO | Julius Meinl is a gem of a coffee bar with three different locations for Chicagoans to enjoy a taste of Austria. Their flagship store in the US is located in Wrigleyville, on the Southport Corridor, and offers a full menu of coffee and tea beverages, as well as breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The space is simple and unassuming; the shop is a gathering place to chat with friends, read, or make the most of their WiFi to catch up on work. The other locations in Ravenswood and Gold Coast, offer a fast-casual menu with a variety of traditional European pastries baked daily to grab and go.

The Julius Meinl Group was founded in Vienna in 1862 by a young boy, Julius Meinl, who came from the Viennese countryside looking for work, and decided to open a coffee shop. The logo of the shop is a tribute to the Ethiopian providence of Kaffa where coffee is said to have originated in 850 AD. Coffee was brought from this region to Vienna via the Turkish army in 1683; the Fez, a headdress used as the logo, was widely worn in Turkish lands at the time they brought the coffee. The business has since stayed in the same family for five generations.

Julius Meinl’s coffee is sourced from farms all over the world, and it is roasted and packed in their production facility in Vienna. Our favorite way to enjoy their coffee is by french press during the many cool months of the year, and via their icy cold brew when Chicago heats up. Signature offerings at their Southport location include baked eggs with a variety of fresh toppings for a light breakfast, crepes and salads are for lunch, and traditional Austrian dinner items including goulash, spätzle, and a rotating offering of ‘suppen’ or soup to round out the meal.

The City Lane stopped by the main store in Vienna on a recent trip to Europe and was able to experience the multi-level restaurant, coffee shop, candy store, and grocery spot. The Chicago store captures some of that vibe, giving Chicagoans their own little piece of Vienna.
