CHICAGO | Lagunitas Brewing Company‘s North Lawndale brewery is a place that has to be seen to be believed. We’ve been to several brewpubs around the world over the years, and this is one of the biggest an most impressive.

Lagunitas was founded in 1993 in Lagunitas, California and expanded very quickly, even more so after being bought out by Heineken (50% in 2015, the remainder in 2017). The Chicago brewery opened in 2014 and is the largest brewery in Chicago and fifth largest in the US. To get to the taproom, you walk though a corridor reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s wonderland (complete with music from the 1971 film) before walking up some stairs and finally reaching the taproom. The taproom seats 300 people on communal tables and has 360 degree views of the brewing facilities. You can even walk on elevated walkways around almost the entire brewery.

19 taps showcase Lagunitas’ entire core range, along with a selection of limited and seasonal offerings. Our advice is to go for a tasting paddle and work your way through what’s on offer. Particular favourites of ours include the A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’, a 7.5% ABV hoppy pale wheat ale, and the Brown Shugga’, a 9.7% ABV Barley Wine.

Brewery tours are run every day and visitors can choose between walking or tasting tours. If you’re not interested in a tour, just head straight on up to the taproom.
