CHICAGO | Local Option is located in a quiet, residential street in Lincoln Park, with its unassuming demeanour belying its status as one of Chicago’s best craft beer venues. The 31 beers on draft rotate weekly, and on the taps you’ll find all sorts of fantastic beers, including many rare drops that aren’t usually seen in Chicago. Three Floyds, De Struise, and Against the Grain are always well represented, and Local Option also runs a gypsy brewing program called Bierwerker which sees several of their own fantastic beers on the taps. If the tap list doesn’t tickle your fancy, there’s a small, but also excellent bottle list available.

The space is long and narrow, and features a lot of loud metal music, bright neon signs, heavy metal paraphernalia, and a TV showing live sports or, as was the case one afternoon when we visited, old reruns of Jeopardy. The crowd is mostly local residents and DePaul staff and students, and there’s a refreshing lack of pretension. The bar might be big on heavy metal, beards and tattoos, but walk in wearing a suit and as long as you’re not a acting like a jerk, you’ll be happily welcomed.

Food wise, the menu is a selection of Cajun and creole dishes, along with your more typical pub grub. Tasty, simple food that goes well with beer like po’ boys, gumbo clams, wings and sandwiches.

What does Local Option mean, you might ask? Well it refers to the Chicago ordinance that allows neighborhoods to keep their precincts dry. When a bar is slated to open, residents are allowed to exercise their “local option”. Needless to say, the residents that tried to stop the bar formerly known as “The Chessman” being renovated and reopened back in 1986, have a constant reminder of just how wrong allowing this bar to never exist would have been.
