SAN FRANCISCO | Gypsy brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergso has been opening a few bars around the world in recent years, and San Francisco the first city in the US to get one. Mikkeller Bar San Francisco is located on the ground floor of a 1907 Victorian building in the Tenderloin, and is a collaboration with Chuck Stilphen (The Trappist). The 80 seat venue is quite spacious, with lots of brick and wood creating a welcoming space. There are paintings on the wall, painted by the same artist who does all of Mikkeller’s beer labels, and a few subtle Danish flourishes dotted around, like the lights which are actually modelled off Danish street lights.

There are 40 rotating taps featuring beers from Mikkeller, other local breweries, and breweries from further afar. There’s also 2 cask handles, a specialised bottle selection and exclusive beers available at the taproom only. The folks here really take their beer seriously. There’s a system that keeps every single beer at a specialised level of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, and three temperature controlled zones for the kegs to ensure that every beer is served exactly the way it’s meant to be. Try the Spontanblackberry, a 7.7% ABV spontaneous sour, or the SD Hazed & Amused, a 5.5% ABV IPA brewed with spelt grain and lupulin hop powder.

The meat-centric food menu features food that’s designed to go well with the beer and includes things like housemade sausages and hot dogs, soft pretzels, a rueben with house-smoked pastrami, a quesadilla, and even a few very tasty salads and vegetarian options. The ‘Texas Ranger’, a house made hot dog with shredden BBQ brisket, fried onion, jalapenos, and chipotle ranch sauce is particularly delicious.
