SAN FRANCISCO | Mr. Holmes Bakehouse is arguably the most famous bakery in San Francisco at the moment – not as widely known as the iconic Tartine Bakery, but definitely known amongst those who are on top of things. Since opening in San Francisco’s Tenderloin in 2015, Mr. Holmes has continued to attract a line of customers outside its front door, waiting to get a taste of the famous cruffins and other delectable pastries.
What’s a cruffin? It’s a croissant that’s baked like a muffin, giving you the density of a muffin with the light layered butter fluffiness of a croissant. It actually originated in Australia, where original Paris trained Mr Holmes head baker, Ry Stephen, hails from, but was perfected in San Francisco. Each day the fillings rotate – think things like salted caramel, honey lavender, coffee and chocolate, and apple pie. 120 are made Monday through Thursday, 150 on Friday, and 180 on Saturday and Sunday; if any aren’t baked perfectly, they are not sold.
Yes there’s a line but it isn’t too bad and trust us, these cruffins live up to the hype. We went at one of the busiest times, a Saturday morning, and waited about half an hour. There’s a second, much shorter line for those who don’t want cruffins so if you’re not one to do lines, we’d still recommend visiting as the other pastries here are fantastic too – think French style patisseries with a modern twist like matcha croissants, banana caramel doughnuts and raspberry and cardamom danishes.
Oh and if you’re in Seoul or Los Angeles you’re in luck, as Mr Holmes has since opened stores in both cities.
