MELBOURNE | Nighthawks is an American dive bar in Collingwood that’s all about, well whatever you want it to be really. Named after after Edward Hopper’s famous painting, Nighthawks is the vision of owners Leah Henry and Marcus Davies, who were inspired by the small dives and drinking dens they came across while visiting Japan and the USA. The kind of places that are no-nonsense, neighbourhood favourites.

It’s a cozy, old fashioned looking venue that certainly hits the notes that Henry and Davies were looking for. A long L-shaped timber bar is lined with bar stools and across from this are several booths. Out the back is a small courtyard which shares a fence with neighbours Bluebird Espresso. Lots of wood, spinning vinyl and assorted nick knacks complete the look.

Drinks wise it’s four beer taps pouring a variety of craft and craftish beers along with more mainstream offerings and a few other craft offerings in the fridge, a small selection of local red and white wines, and a decent spirits list for those who want something harder or a cocktail.

There’s no kitchen here, but if you’re hungry you can always order food in from the pizza shop across the road. Keep an eye out for details on live gigs in the front room, and cult film nights every fortnight, when all kinds of weird and wonderful things are shown.
