AUCKLAND | Housed in the space that was once home to Quay St Cafe, Oaken is quite different to its predecessor. Mouthful Restaurant Group (the people behind Auckland eateries Beirut and Mexico) have gone for a Scandinavian vibe with wood panelling, wooden furniture, and nature artwork to create a bright, airy space.
In the morning, Oaken is a popular brunch spot, with a small selection of enticing food options complimented by coffee roasted by multiple independent roasters like Eighthirty, Peoples and Allpress. The jaffles and toasties are famous here, with filings like cauliflower cheese, Mercer maasdam, egg and pickles, or bacon and egg. Also keep an eye out for the porridge of the day, and the duck egg white omelette with charred lettuce, avocado and torched peppers.
As the day goes on, the breakfast menu morphs into a more lunch and dinner-appropriate small dishes with choices like beef cheek croquettes, steak, pasta of the day, and a selection of cheese and charcuterie. It’s mostly simple dishes that allow the quality produce to shine. For those wanting an alcoholic tipple, a mixutre of commercial lagers on tap, along with a rotating craft offering is available along with a small selection of craft beer in bottles. There’s a good selection of mostly local wines, along with five different types of gin and tonics, and five other cocktails, including an Aperol spritz with rosé on tap and a cask Negroni with smoky notes.
