MELBOURNE | Paper Cup Project is an idea that’s so simple, it makes you wonder why nobody thought about it earlier. It started in Perth when Daniel Goodman, founder of Paper Cup Project, was thinking of ways to help local artists, designers, thinkers and doers connect with the local community – not just on social media, but in a tangible way. Eventually, he came up with the idea of approaching local cafes around Perth and asking if they were interested in having art by local artists wrapped around their coffee cups. A lot of people were interested, and Paper Cup Project was born.
Every two to three months, Paper Cup Project wrap a local artist’s work around biodegradable cups and give it an issue number. They then distribute the cups out to independent cafes and restaurants around town. They also give back to the community by donating a percentage of profits and organising events for a different local charity with each new issue.
Today, there are over 50 cafes involved in Perth, and at 10 cafes at launch in Melbourne. We love initiatives like this, that help connect a city’s creatives with a wider audience, and look forward to seeing Paper Cup Project expand to more cafes in Perth, Melbourne, and the rest of Australia.
