LOS ANGELES | Australia is famed for its coffee and brunch scene, and Paramount Coffee Project is one of the best places to get a slice of this scene in Los Angeles. The DTLA location of the popular cafe opened in 2018, and is an expansion of the original founded by Jin Ng of Paramount House, Mark Dundon of Seven Seeds and Russell Beard of Reuben Hills in Surry Hills, Sydney in 2013. It’s the second Los Angeles location, following the Fairfax cafe that opened in 2015
The bright warehouse space features large windows that look out onto the street and quite a large dining area. It follows the concept of actually nailing what Aussie cafes do right, without any tacky or themed nonsense.
The coffee menu features local and international roasters on a rotational basis. Beans are chosen in blind cuppings for their cup quality and flavour, and Paramount also roast their own coffee, transparently sourced through their relationships with importers and producers. It’s available brewed in a variety of ways – espresso, cold brew, drip filter and more. And of course, you can get a fantastic flat white here.
For food it’s an assortment of Aussie brunch classics, which in the true style of an Aussie cafe draw upon local influences and seasonal produce. Think avocado tartine with furikake, fried shallots, cucumber, and lemon vinegarette, and “The Paramount” – scrambled eggs with cheddar and tomato jam atop a house made salt & pepper biscuit. And do keep an eye out for the famed Aussie style sausage roll – make sure you order some ketchup (or tomato sauce as the Aussies call it) to squirt on the top.
