CUSCO | Puca Pucara is a military fortress located 7km from the historic center of Cusco. Limited information is known about this site however it is believed the ruin was built during the reign of Pachucutec, the ninth ruler of the Inca Empire. It is believed that the fort was positioned on higher ground to provide a strategic outpost to spot trouble that may be heading towards Cusco as well in addition to serving as a checkpoint and administrative center. Puca Pucara is referred to as the “red fortress” in Quechua due to the high iron deposits in the stones resulting in a red hue. When the fortress was originally believed it is noted that the red colour was more prominent however it has faded over time.
Puca Pucara is part of the Boleto Turistco, and you’ll need this tourist pass to enter the site. The Boleto Turistco can be purchased at any of the sites listed on the pass. The ruins are open from 7am to 6pm daily with English and Spanish tour guides available to hire.
