SANTA ROSA | Russian River Brewing Company is a brewery and brewpub in Santa Rosa that is famous for making what, for many years, was considered the best beer in the world. It’s a casual space, a typical sports bar from appearances and popular with the local student population and other fans of good beer. It’s a great pub in its own right, but the fantastic, world-renowned beers put it into a league of its own.

The most famous beer that people come to Russian River for is Pliny The Elder, an 8.0% ABV Double IPA. Consider it the father of the style – Russian River owner Vinnie Cilurzo is widely considered to be the man who created the style back in 1994 when he worked at the since closed Blind Pig Brewery. Pliny The Elder is packed with Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ, and Simcoe hops and is super delicious. It’s brewed in limited quantities because the brewery only wants people to drink it super fresh, and of course the best place to do that is right here.

Another year-round beer which we actually prefer to Pliny The Elder is Blind Pig. It’s a 6.25% ABV IPA that’s juicy and delicious. As well as their famous hop forward beers, Russian River brew a range of other styles, including several well regarded sour and barrel aged beers. Try the Consecration, a 10.0% ABV Dark Ale aged for 4 to 8 months in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels from local wineries with black currants, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus. The end result is heavenly.

If it all sounds too confusing, you can go for the epic tasting paddle which gives you a selection of 18 of the beers on tap, or the half paddle which gets you 9.

For food it’s quality versions of typical pub grub – wings, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, salads and an assortment of starters, sides and plates. We highly recommend the tasty pizzas and wings – though be warned that the ‘savage’ wings are very hot!

If you’re in town at the right time of year you may also be able to try the famed Pliny The Younger, a 10.25% ABV Triple IPA that’s released once a year. Be warned though, lines at the brewery on Pliny The Younger day stretch for hours, with people lining up from the day before to get a chance at trying this rare beer.
