LOS ANGELES | Located in Los Angeles’ Arts District ROW DTLA development, Smorgasburg is home to over 50 local vendors selling all kinds of wonderful food, from popular, on trend treats to more obscure regional delights. And, thanks to Los Angeles’ great weather, it’s open every Sunday throughout the year, unlike the NYC original.

When I was last in town I visited with a couple of friends and we ate our way through a lot of the delights on offer. One of my favourite stalls is Poncho’s Tlayudas, who specialise in tlayudas. It’s a large, thin, crispy corn husk tortilla dish unique to Mexico’s Oaxaca area. Owner Alfonso “Poncho” Martínez de Santo Domingo Albarradas’ tlayudas are considered by many to be the best version in Los Angeles, as good as anything you’ll find in Oaxaxa.

I opted for the signature tlayuda. The smoky blue and yellow corn tortilla is filled with asiento and black beans, Oaxacan cheese, salsa, and shredded lettuce. For a “side” there a choice of tasajo, chorizo, and blood sausage. I had to go for the rich, wonderfully spiced blood sausage of course. Paired with the fiery house made hot sauce, each bite is a revelation. Familiar Mexican flavours yet completely new at the same time.

I also enjoyed ice-cream from Wanderlust Creamery, a gelato spot by co-founders JP Lopez and Adrienne Borlongan that’s inspired by their global travels, and the travels/suggestions of customers. The signature ube malted crunch is a must try. It’s inspired by Lopez and Borlongan’s Filipino heritage and American upbringing, it’s made with malted milk, sweet purple yams (ube) malted milk, and crunchy malted milk pieces. Inside the ube waffle cone, it’s a fantastic fusion of cultures and flavours.

No matter your tastes, if you’re looking for something familiar or something new, you’ll find something you want at Smorgasburg. An essential food stop for anyone visiting Los Angeles.
