LOS ANGELES | Snake Pit Alehouse on Melrose celebrated its 25th birthday in 2016, a great achievement for any bar in a hip city where new venues open and close all of the time. The secret to its success is a genuine neighbourhood feel, complete lack of pretension, and some mighty fine food and drinks. The space is a bit divey and a bit homely and works really well in helping create the neighbourhood atmosphere.
There are 22 beers on draft and over a hundred different kinds of whiskies on offer at Snake Pit Alehouse, with options ranging from the commercial and common to the independent and crafty. There’s a decent bottled beer list and lots of great wines and non-whisky spirits here too so no-one need feel left out. Personally, we love the whisky flights, which contain four thoughtfully selected whiskys designed to showcase some aspect of the drinks. And of course there’s always the option of a boilermaker – why choose between beer and whisky when you can have both?
Food is pub food done well – we recommend the nachos made with cheddar cheese, black beans, guacamole, sour cream, and fresh chipotle salsa, or any one of the fantastic burgers which can be customised to your liking. There are lots of healthy and vegan options too so, just as with the drinks, there’s something for everyone. The quality of the ingredients is top notch, and features organic and free range chicken, grass-fed beef, fresh seafood and organic dairy.
While not a sports bar as such, Snake Pit Alehouse is also a fantastic place to watch live sports. Well placed screens and the fact that most people aren’t actually there to watch the game means you’ll almost always find a great spot with a clear view of a screen.
