SAN DIEGO | South Beach Bar & Grille Ocean Beach has become a San Diego institution since opening its doors in 1992. Located on Newport Avenue, just off the beach, visitors are treated to that rare combination – a place that serves up food that matches the view if you can nab one of the upstairs tables.

This place gets very busy, in no small part due to the fact that it offers one of the best fish tacos in San Diego. The grilled tacos are very popular here, with the mahi (marinated) a standout. The fish is marinated overnight and served on a soft flour tortilla, with cheese, red cabbage, salsa fresca. If flour tortillas aren’t your thing, corn tortillas are available on request. Other fish options include things like albacore, shrimp, lobster, and shark. Carne asada and chicken are also available, but really you should go for the fish. If grilled fish isn’t what you’re after, the fried tacos, and in particular the Baja fish (pollock) tacos are outstanding. For us, it’s the mahi, wahoo, and Baja that you want, but you really can’t go wrong no matter what you order.

If it’s something other than tacos that you want, there’s a lot of other food on offer at South Beach Bar & Grille too. Burgers, oysters, clams, and shrimp for example, along with a range of Mexican sides. If you’re thirsty, the main focus is the impressive beer list, which contains 24 mostly Californian beers on tap, including some interesting one-off and seasonal brews from local breweries like Stone and Ballast Point.
