TAHOE | Lake Tahoe is a freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada of the United States that stretches across California and Nevada. It’s the largest alpine lake in North America and a popular site for tourists all year round. During the winter skiing, sledding, snowmobile riding, snowshoeing and après nightlife are popular while during the summer it’s all about water sports, hiking, mountain biking, and golf. For those wanting something less action packed, there are numerous resorts, oversized hot tubs, cocktail bars, breweries and restaurants to suit all budgets. If it’s gambling your’e into, the Nevada side is home to several casinos.
Many small towns surround Tahoe which act as a base for most visitors to the area. When I visited in April 2016 I explored the area on the Southern Californian part of the lake, close to the town of South Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay. It’s a truly breathtaking part of the world, with mountains and forests surrounding the lake on all sides. Mark Twain once referred to Tahoe as being the “fairest picture the whole world affords” and its easy to see why.
The sky is often a vibrant cobalt blue colour which reflects onto the water due to the clarity and depth of the lake. In fact, at 1,645 ft (501 m) deep, Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the United States. Nearby, several short trails that can easily be completed in less than an hour provided the opportunity to see some amazing vistas, fauna and flora even for those who don’t have long to spend in the area. I only had a few hours in which to explore Lake Tahoe, but it was still well worth the visit. Whether it’s an entire week or more, or just a few hours, a visit to Lake Tahoe is highly recommended.
