MELBOURNE | The Catfish Fitzroy is a great spot on Gertrude street that offers good drinks with a relaxed vibe downstairs and live music upstairs. Formerly home to Gertrude’s Brown Couch, current owners Kieran Yewdall and Michael Shaughnessy wanted to recapture what made Gertrude’s Brown Couch good when it was at its best, while updating what needed to be updated.
The result is a bar that has no pretension and gets all of the important things right. It’s one of Melbourne’s top craft beer venues, with 8 rotating taps downstairs and 4 upstairs always showcasing an assortment of interesting beers. If you’re not sure which beer to order, the staff will happily discuss what’s on offer and help you find the right beer for you. For those who aren’t into beer, there’s a nicely focused wine and cocktail list and some top notch spirits on offer. Food is taken care of by Sparrow’s Philly Cheesesteaks, who have a permanent setup in the venue. We lost count of the amount of times we’ve had a cheesesteak from here – they always do the trick.
There’s a small courtyard out the back for when the weather is agreeable and upstairs houses the band room, where local artists play mostly blues, New Orleans jazz and folk. In fact that name of the bar comes from the 1940s blues song “Catfish Blues”. Upstairs also has a projector which allows film nights to occur on some of the days that there’s no one booked in to play live music.
