AUCKLAND | The Cav, formerly known as The Cavalier Hotel, and before that The Suffolk Hotel is an Auckland institution dating back to the 1860s. Ponsonby has seen many changes but the Cav has always been around to offer locals good food and drinks.
It’s a spacious venue, with a large main bar, a little section with comfy couches and a fireplace for those cold days, and a huge outdoor patio with views across to the CBD when the weather is good. The crowd is mixed, with a range of ages and people from all walks of life. A few big screens dotted around the venue mean that the Cav can get very lively when live sports are being shown. We visited during an All Blacks game and the atmosphere was fantastic.
The Cav is owned by Lion, so the beer selection isn’t as crafty as we’d hoped but thankfully Lion’s craft portfolio contains breweries like New Zealand’s Speights, Emersons, Mac’s, and Panhead and Aussie brewers Little Creatures and James Squires, so the beer selection is still a cut above your average bar. Lion’s extensive New Zealand wine portfolio also means there are some quality local wines on offer too. Of course, those looking for cocktails and spirits are also covered.
For food, is all about pub classics done with flair, and contains enough options to keep everyone happy. Think burgers, sandwiches, salads, tacos, and an assortment of bar snacks and other pub classics. Try the pulled pork taco with Texas BBQ pulled pork, tomato, iceberg, coriander, jalapeños, tangy sour cream, tomatillo sauce, or the pan roasted Hapuka with Puy lentils, charred endive, fennel, grapefruit, cherry tomato, mint, shallot, and white balsamic dressing.
