MELBOURNE | The Elysian Whisky Bar is Melbourne’s latest whisky bar from Kelvin Low (ex Whisky and Alement) and Yao Wong (ex White Oak) and brings a Japanese-style whisky experience to this quiet section of Brunswick Road. By Japanese style, we don’t mean Japanese whisky (although there are lots of them) but rather the type of bar – a small, intimate place with a focus on doing one thing particularly well, where the people behind the bar are as much a fixture of the bar as the furniture and fittings.
Speaking of furniture and fittings, it’s a dark space with lots of wood panneling, dominated by the large Californian Redwood bar, with leather stools and booths, and a few tables.
Low and Wong know their stuff, and have sourced a wide variety of whiskys from places like Japan, Taiwan, Scotland, India, Sweden, Germany and the United States, many of which you won’t find elsewhere in Melbourne. Ichiro’s Malt, for example, is a brand of whisky that we found hard to source when we were last in Japan – at Elysian, they’ve got several varieties, including rare single barrel releases. As long as its “quirky and interesting” Low and Wong will stock it, and they’re happy to talk you through anything you might want to know.
There’s a small seasonal cocktail menu too, along with a small selection of other spirits, wine and beer. On the food front its charcuterie and cheese boards, along with more substantial dishes coming soon, prepared offsite by chef Ryo Kitahara of Assiette de Parti.
