AUCKLAND | The Golden Dawn is a pop up bar (well it was meant to be pop up) in Ponsonby that opened seven years ago and established itself as a favourite of Auckland’s bar scene. Occupying an old shop front and stables yard, The Golden Dawn offers a focused, quality selection of local wine and beer along with cocktails, a small food menu, and regular live bands and DJs.
It’s not immediately apparent where The Golden Dawn is, but if you walk through the unmarked green door you’ll enter a space that’s been designed for people who want to “hide out from the boring and scary people of the city”. Everyone is welcome as long as they’re not acting like dicks, and the bar has a strict anti-harassment policy. It’s all about having a great time, enjoying great food and drinks, and discovering independent music that you might not otherwise be exposed to.
A lot of places that open up with these sorts of philosophies end up being quite pretentious and judgmental, but not The Golden Dawn. It succeeds at what it tries to achieve, and Auckland’s bar scene is all the better for it.
Note: Golden Dawn recently announced that it will be closing in March 2018. The owners plan on doing something new, so watch this space – we’re sure it’ll be amazing.
