MELBOURNE | The Night Heron, that’s the Footscray bar not the bird, is one of the many small bars that have sprung up around Footscray recently. Owners Ross Taylor, Sam Gaul and Ben Schembri set up the bar not with the aim of doing anything drastic, but nailing what in their minds, makes a great bar – friendly staff, great drinks, live music by local artists, an unpretentious atmosphere, and the aforementioned beer garden.
Walk in and you can definitely tell this place isn’t trying to be fancy. It’s a simple, small space with concrete floors, a wooden bar, tables and seats, and white walls. Out the back is a beer garden that’s thankfully heated so you can enjoy it year ’round. The tap list contains a small selection of local, crafty brews, with a few more interesting craft beer cans in the fridges. The wine list is similarly focused and locally influenced, and there’s a good selection of spirits for those looking for a cocktail, mixed drink, or something on the rocks.
The Night Heron don’t have a kitchen, but you can order food from nearby restaurants so whether its burgers, pho or injera you’re after, you’re well sorted.
Music wise, there’s no rule as to the kind of music that’s played here. Whether it’s a local band playing a live gig, or a DJ mixing a set on the decks, you never quite know what you’ll find, but needless to say it’s always quality. The perfect example of what a local’s bar should be, that strikes the right balance between the Footscray of old and new.
