LOS ANGELES | The Spirit Guild is a distillery in Los Angeles’ Arts District that was opened by Morgan McLachlan and Miller Duvall in 2012. As soon as you walk inside the current space, which opened in 2016, you get a real sense that this distillery has a sense of place that connects it to the area. Light shines throught the stained-glass windows of the former industrial space, which features a walnut panelled wall with new and vintage California inspired artwork, and a raw wood bar. In fact, the entire distillery was inspired by 1970s California design. Toward the back, the operational side of things can be observed.
This isn’t a bar proper, but you can taste what’s being produced here. And what’s being produced here is very good. There’s the signature Astral Pacific Gin and Vapid Vodka that Morgan and Miller have crafted from California clementines from Miller’s family farm in Bakersfield, and things like limoncello and brandy. There’s a real drive to showcase California agriculture, and the state’s amazing produce.
We spoke with McLachlan, who is the head distiller, when we visited, and her passion for what she does, and for the brand in general, really shone through. The science behind the spirits that she distils is very interesting. As for the taste of the spirits, they’re clean, tasty, and the sense of place that embodies them shines through.
The distillery tour and presentation lasts around 45 minutes and includes a tasting. The $10 admission price includes a $5 discount toward the purchase of a bottle of your choice.
