LOS ANGELES | The Whisperer is an Echo Park bar and eatery that’s one of our favourite spots in this part of town. Restaurateur Dion Antic has created a dark space with very low lighting, plush leather booths and wine and beer bottle light fixtures that suit the location to a T. Music is a big part of the bar, and the eclectix mixture of tunes ranges from 1960s soul to garage rock, Daft Punk, and everything in between.
Wine and beer are the main focus here – 15 different craft beers are poured from the old-style microphone tap while the wine list is paired with music. The Gaspard, an organic Sauvignon Blanc from Touraine, France, pairs with Kate Bush while the Secret Spot, a Red Field Blend for Portugal’s Douro Valley, matches with the Beastie Boys. Yes it’s a bit gimmicky, but it’s good fun and the quality of the wines on offer here is fantastic.
Food wise it’s all about “stepped up” American classics done right. The street-style grilled corn with chili mayonnaise, Cotija Cheese, cilantro, and lime is very tasty while the ‘Hen House Fried Chicken’, two pieces served with spicy mac & cheese, green beans, and roasted red peppers hits all of the right notes.
Whether it’s just a drink you’re after, or a meal or snack, The Whisperer is a great place to visit. Service is great and the atmosphere is causal and inviting, with the fantastic tunes rounding things off nicely.
