SAN FRANCISCO | Toronado is the one craft beer place in San Francisco that everyone knows about even if they’ve never been to the city. It’s been around for 30 years, well before the modern craft beer boom began, and continues to offer one of the best ranges of craft beer in town both on tap and in bottles. It’s got the atmosphere of a dive bar – gritty and worn in, and full of character. It’s stools at the bar, and a few high tables with stools too.
Toronado has had an unwavering dedication for 30 years and it shows. 45 taps and an extensive bottle list mean there’s something to make everyone happy. From local beers to beers from the rest of the USA and further afar there’s a lot to like here. Often you’ll find rare beers on tap that you won’t be able to find anywhere else, but there’s accessible stuff on the menu too so don’t think that this is a place for beer snobs only.
No write up of Toronado would be complete without mentioning the service. The attitude and generally unwelcoming nature of some of the staff at Toronado is something that’s known to most, and by all accounts it seems to be a bit of a roll of the dice as to what experience you’ll get in that regard. We’ve only had good service when we’ve visited, but have spoken to friends who have had a very different experience. Our advice is to not be a dick and respect the venue. Have your cash ready and know what you want to order before you get to the bar, tip reasonably, and have manners.
There’s no food here, but you can order one of the fantastic hot dogs from Rosamunde Sausage Grill next door and have it brought to you at the bar. Also do be aware that Toronado is a cash only bar.
