MELBOURNE | Trumpy Bar + Kitchen Thornbury is a bar and eatery that’s easy to miss as you walk past its unassuming facade along High Street. Housed in a former warehouse with the requisite high ceilings, exposed brick walls and wooden beams, the space is split into 3 distinct parts. There’s the light filled front bar, the dining section behind it and a small outdoor area at the back. The passion for good drinks is evident at Trumpy – a quick glance at the line up of bottles behind the bar reveals a great selection of familiar and unfamiliar brands. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are more than happy to discuss the reasons behind why any particular spirit is stocked and make up a suitable cocktail to showcase its characteristics, or any other drink you might want. The gin and tonics here are especially good, and it’s the first place we tried English gin Boodles.

Food is no afterthought at Trumpy either. Dishes are designed to share but can easily be eaten as individual mains if desired. The menu contains pub favourites done with flair, along with a few items that deviate from the norm. The pasture fed porterhouse is fantastic, and the thick house cut chips served with herb aioli are some of the best we’ve tried. For those looking for a lighter option, the red quinoa salad with buckwheat, chickpea, sweet potato, coriander and mixed seeds is a great option. There are also the famous duck pies – we haven’t tried these yet but have heard very good things about them.

Whether it’s a quiet drink or a substantial feed you’re after, Trumpy delivers in a casual, enticing space.
