CHICAGO | Tuco & Blondie is a Mexican restaurant on Southport that lures diners in with the promise of “Mexifun”. It’s from the Four Star Restaurant Group (Crosby’s Kitchen, Smoke Daddy, D.O.C Wine Bar) and focuses on food that’s causal and tastes great. The space is suitably casusal, and features bright colours, pop art and pop culture references along with distressed wood and graphic tiles. There’s enough space for 250 people in here, with a spacious indoor area leading to a heated patio out back.

While quality ingredients are used, Tuco & Blondie isn’t trying to be an authentic Mexican cantina, and the food ranges from authentic Mexican meals to dishes inspired by childhood American-Mexican favourites. Fajitas (steak, chicken, shrimp, fish, poblano-mushroom) are a favourite here, with each served with rice and beans, guacamole, roasted onions and peppers, housemade flour tortillas. There’s tacos and nachos of course, along with an assortment of appetizers and other mains – check out the chili-rubbed pork tenderloin.

What we really like about Tuco & Blondie is their brunch menu, which has a lot of tasty options. It’s hard to go past the Chilaquiles – roasted chicken, over easy eggs, salsa verde, chihuahua cheese, sour cream, pico de gallo, sour cream.

For drinks it’s an assortment of frozen margaritas, Mloody Mary’s and other cocktails, along with a good range of mezcal, tequila, wine and beer.
