Winking Seal Beer Co., District 1

HO CHI MINH CITY | Winking Seal Beer Co. is a brewery started by friends Mark Nerney and Brian Kekitch, who met while working together in Singapore in 2015. When they visited Ho Chi Minh City and saw that the city was on the cusp of a craft beer revolution, they knew they wanted to get involved, so teamed up with Denver native Ben Fazioli and founded Winking Seal.

The space is a small Art Deco-Indochine designed venue, with a downstairs bar, an upstairs bar and a rooftop terrace with an open-air balcony. The beer is brewed in Kizuna, just south of the city, but the taproom is located on Dang Thi Nhu, in the heart of District 1 and just a short walk from the Dang Thi Nhu roundabout and future central metro station. On the taps you’ll find eight of Winking Seal’s own beers, along with a few guest beers.

We recommend the Mekong Mashup, a 6.8% ABV Summer Ale which uses Belgian yeast and has a sweet malt profile, and the One Eye, a 10.1% ABV Double IPA packed full of malt and hops. A tasting paddle gets you four beers of your choice. For food, it’s a mixture of elevated pub food – we recommend the Beeramisu – a stout-soaked tiramisu, for something different and delicious.
