PERTH | There’s a new bar in Perth, Winston Small Bar, and it’s become one of my favourite place to head to for a drink in Northbridge. It’s owned by Braeden La Marr and Kabir Ramasary, the duo behind pioneering Perth small bars The Bird and Ezra Pound, and adjoining Nashville hot chicken spot, South Bird.
Winston is inspired by New Orleans, and aims to recreate the warm, inviting ambience of that city’s small bars. It’s a low lit space with moody lighting and candles, and New Orleans themed posters, paintings, and artworks on the walls. Over the speakers, you’ll hear classic and contemporary blues and jazz, and if you’re lucky you might stumble across the occasional live performance.
The drinks menu features a quality selection of beers, wines, spirits and classic cocktails, along with a weekly rotating selection of four house creations. One sour, a sweet, a still, and a surprise cocktail. The ‘K-Pop’ on offer when I visited, was a delightful blend of gin, peche, kaffir and kimchi, lime, and prosecco. When I asked for an interesting take on the old fashioned, the team crafted a creation from one of the past special menus that hit the spot.
To eat, it’s a New Orleans inspired snack menu featuring things like a fried chicken or mushroom po’ boy, creole spiced fries, and okra mac and cheese. You can also pop through the side door and order food from South Bird, which they’ll bring to you when ready.
