MELBOURNE | Northcote Social Club is a pub that’s part owned by the people behind the Corner Hotel, and unsurprisingly, has a strong focus on live music. The Northcote Social Club has been around since 2004, when the former Commercial Hotel was revamped, and after a second update in 2015, has a great feel to it. The old bar at the front still feels like a proper old school pub, the spacious beer garden is fantastic, and the 300 capacity band room is one of the best live music venues in town.
The band room hosts all kind of artists – there’s strong support for local music across a wide variety of genres. Local favourites Courtney Barnett and Amy Shark played here when they were up-and-coming, and you never know when a big international artist might secretly pop up – in the past artists like the Pixies and Lady Gaga have done secret gigs here. The band room also play hosts to things like comedy shows and movie nights.
The drinks list is simple – one page of mostly Australian wines with a few international drops for good measure, and one page featuring cocktail jugs along with beers, which range from the commercial end of the market to the crafty, but still accessible end of the scale. It’s not the best selection of drinks in town, but there’s enough variety to ensure that you’ll always find a few things that you like on offer.
Food wise is elevated pub grub. Burgers, steak, parmigiana and fish & chips share the menu with salads, vegan cauliflower nachos (meat eaters can add beef brisket), and baba ganoush. Simple, tasty stuff that fits the venue perfectly.
