MELBOURNE | The Local Burger Co. Carlton North is a place that’s eschewed the recent trend towards American style burgers to instead offer creations more in line with what you would have expected a higher end burger place to offer before the recent burger craze that swept across Melbourne. It’s not an example of simply being behind the times though, but a purposeful attempt at creating burgers that are full in flavour, using quality ingredients, without the heaviness and intensity of many other burgers out there.
The result is tasty creations like the classic chicken, which features slow cooked (not fried) chicken thigh with Swiss cheese, Dijon mustard, and pickled onion. It’s light a tasty, and the use of thigh instead of breast means that the chicken is a lot more tender than you usually find in a chicken burger. Another highlight is the vegetarian mushroom burger with slow roasted mushroom, grilled haloumi, eggplant, tomato relish, lettuce and house-made mayonnaise. For those who do want a heavier option, there are items like the beef, bacon (maple glazed) and cheese burger to keep you satisfied, but for us it’s the “healthier” options that stand out.
Sides include things like Louisiana-style hot wings, fries, and onion rings, and a range of additions means you can customise your burger pretty much any way you want.
If you’re not up for the extra carbs, all burgers can be ordered sans-bun, and the staff will swap out the bun for a side salad. We like that The Local Burger Co. is doing something a bit different than other burger spots, and judging by the fact that there are always people inside, we guess the locals do too.
