MELBOURNE | 3 Ravens Brewery is the place to go if you want to get a taste of the latest release beers from the Thornbury-based brewer before anyone else, and bottles no longer available elsewhere. Formerly known as the ‘Pleasure Palace’, the brewpub has since gotten rid of the animal print and velour furnishings and is larger and brighter, with high wooden benches, re-purposed pallets, and a 10 tap bar.

The beers at 3 Ravens have come a long way since the original owners first started brewing back in 2003. The original focus was on traditional European and American ales, and its these beers that now form the seasonal “Classic” range. The English Pale Ale is one of our favourites from this range, and if you find it on hand pump is one of the best locally brewed examples of the style. The brewery was purchased by Western Australia’s Mash Brewery in 2013, and since then a lot of changes have occurred.

The current core range of beers features three beers designed to appeal to a wide audience – the Thornbury Pilsner, Tropical Pale Ale, and New World IPA. They’re all good examples of the style, but the real reason we love 3 Ravens these days is because of the specialty beers they release throughout the year. ‘Acid’ is a 3.5% sour beer with bright, tropical, zesty notes while ‘Juicy’ is a New England style unfiltered IPA with low bitterness and a smooth mouthfeel.

The core version of Juicy clocks in at 6.0% and has flavours of and aromas of fruit juice, spice, and malt. One-off variations have added things like yuzu, changed up the hop used, or shaken things up more significantly – the Moussey Juicy was a Chocolate Milkshake NEIPA packed with cocoa, cacao, vanilla, lactose, pectin and roasted grains. Acid, meanwhile, saw a brown, Cola version released in limited quantities.

For those looking beyond the taps, 3 Ravens have a fridge filled with a number of bottle-only releases and former specialty beers no longer available on tap. There’s the Wild Ravens mixed fermentation beers, barleywines, and barrel aged releases.

There’s also a decent selection of craft spirits behind the bar, and a number of boilermakers if you’re looking for something a bit different.

There’s no kitchen at 3 Ravens, but there’s often food trucks out the front offering things like tacos, burgers, and BBQ. Keep an eye out on 3 Ravens’ Facebook page for regular beer events, artisan markets, quiz nights and more.
