MELBOURNE | As the year draws to and end, the time has come for us to put together our list of the best new Melbourne cafes of 2017. Melbourne’s is a city that’s known for its great coffee culture and cafes, and 2017 continued to show why this is the case. A wide variety of places opened over the year, from new branches of familiar names (Rustica Rialto) to places doing completely unique things and putting a twist of their family’s heritage on the usual Melbourne cafe favourites (Proud Sprout, Northcote STN).
Coffee and food options in the CBD and further afar all stepped up a notch, with a focus on local and seasonal ingredients, along with all kinds of weird and wonderful takes on the latte apparent across most venues. Of course, those who wanted the ubiquitous smashed avocado on toast, a burger or a simple flat white continued to be well catered to in 2017, but those looking for something different were truly rewarded with cafe dishes designed to wow both visually and flavour wise. To our relief, last year’s freakshake craze well and truly died down in 2017.
