MELBOURNE | Afghan Tasty Food has been open for almost a decade, and in that time has become an institution for those looking for authentic Afghan food in Melbourne. It was opened by Muheen Bahrami, who moved to Australia in 1991 after fleeing Kabul, and proudly explained to us when we visited that he was one of the first food businesses to open on the strip, which 10 years ago was better known for its drug dealers than the restaurants and family friendly spaces of today.
The space is very simple. Tiled floors and walls, fluorescent lighting, and wooden tables and seats fill most of the restaurant, with a service counter, large charcoal grill, and kitchen out the back. The menu features an assortment of traditional Afghan dishes, and everything is cooked fresh to order.
Kebabs, that’s meat skewers not doner kebabs, are a must. A choice of variations of chicken, lamb and beef are offered, and all come with a side of Afghan flat bread, chutneys, and an undressed salad of iceberg, cucumber and tomato. We tried the shami (minced beef), and tikka (lamb backstrap) – both are deliciously smoky, tender and full of flavour. Other dishes include things like meat and rice dishes, manto – dumplings filled with minced lamb, onion, garlic chives and coriander, topped with yoghurt sauce and channa dhaal, and our favourite ashak – which replaces the meat dumpling filling of manto with a filling of
garlic, chives and coriander. It’s all very delicious, and the friendly staff are happy to explain the dishes to you if you need some help deciding what to order.
Not only is Afghan Tasty Food a restaurant, but its also a bakery that supplies many of the local restaurants and shops with quality Afghan breads. Make sure to grab some to take home before you leave.
