MELBOURNE | As the last weekend of September approaches (well OK, the first weekend of October but you know what we mean), Melbourne is gearing up for the AFL Grand Final and the whole city has gone even more AFL crazy than usual. As part of the Grand Final week celebrations, the AFL and Foxtel have teamed up to create the AFL Foxtel Footy Festival. It starts today and runs for 4 days until Grand Final day on Saturday.
Entry is free and there are loads of activities for everyone, even those who don’t like the footy (we’ve heard rumours of non-AFL fans existing in Melbourne). Expect AFL player appearances, live music, great Melbourne chefs, kids activities and movie screenings. For the kids there are Auskick skills challenges, face painting, playgrounds and live entertainment, along with appearances by a range of popular Nickelodeon and Disney characters that us childless folk at The City Lane haven’t heard of but are told the kids adore. All 112 Premiership Cups from 1897-2015 are also on display.
If it’s food you’re after, then there are some really top quality food options on offer. Popping up at the festival are stalls from popular Melbourne restaurants Estelle (trading as Mistress Estelle), Biggie Smalls, Tokyo Tina, Lady Carolina, Fancy Hank’s, Burch & Purchese. Along with some of their favourite menu items you’ll also be able to pick up some specially created Grand Final delicacies. If you want a drink, bars from Wolf Blass, Fat Yak and Bulmers are there to keep you satisfied.
If you’re a parent looking to find a way to keep your kids occupied, or just wanting to enjoy the atmosphere and some great food and drinks, the AFL Foxtel Footy Festival is definitely worth checking out.
