CAIRNS | You don’t need to be in the big city to discover those laneway gems. You’d likely miss Ah-Room if it wasn’t for the A Frame on the main street at the start of the laneway.
The business was started by Korean pastry chef El Jin in 2018 as a home cake making business. In August 2020, El Jin’s cakes became so in demand that she opened a bricks and mortar, hole in the wall cafe.
Inside, you’ll find an assortment of cakes and baked treats. Mostly French style deserts with flavours bouncing between traditional French flavours, and Korean and Japanese influences. Think things like Earl Grey, raspberry, yuzu, matcha, and black sesame.
As well as desserts, there’s also flavoured sodas using syrups like yuzu and plum, matcha lattes, and coffee using beans from local roastery Tattoed Sailor Coffee Roasters.
And yes, you can still order whole cakes in advance for special occasions.
