CANBERRA | Akiba is a restaurant that aims to capture the spirit of the informal and exciting atmosphere of the great food halls and dining rooms throughout the East-Asia region. Walking inside the casual venue and you’re greeted with a vibrant, loud, bright space. Think Khao San Road, Bangkok meets Akhiabara, Tokyo. Places like this can suffer from being all style over substance, but thankfully Akiba delivers not just on atmosphere, but on food too.

The food is influenced by East-Asia and showcases the many styles of Asian barbecue, raw dishes and dim sum. Local ingredients and producers are used where possible, and the result is a lot of flavour filled, quality food. We loved the punchy kingfish ceviche with coconut, nam jim, coriander, and were also impressed by the melt in your mouth tender pork belly bun with char sui, asian slaw. The beef short rib, glazed with tamarind caramel, and topped with thai basil, is rich, flavoursome, tender delight, and even the roast carrot with miso, yuzu, sesame is outstanding.

The food menu is designed to share, so try and visit with a few friends so you can try a lot of different things.

Drinks wise the focus is on cocktails, which feature the same influences as the food menu. Try the Geisha’s Kiss, with plum wine, sake and a hint of rose. There’s also an extensive sake list, and a small selection of quality wines and mostly Australian craft beers.

It’s rare that we visit a place where every dish we order is outstanding, but Akiba achieves this. Great food and a fun atmosphere make it a must visit for anyone who finds themselves in Canberra.
