MELBOURNE | Amber Craft Beer is a bar in Hawthorn that, despite the name, actually focuses not just on craft beer, but also craft cider and wine. The front bar has a rustic feel, and is where you order your drinks, while the ‘games room’ feels like a cozy lounge room, and is just behind the main bar. Behind all of this is a little shed which offers a nice outdoor reprieve that’s a bit different than the usual courtyard.
Owner Richard Whitebrook is a home and certified beer judge, and wants his customers to enjoy beer as much as he does. It’s not just about drinking good beer here (although if that’s all you want to do you can), but about talking beer, and learning about beer. Whether it’s something local from one of the six beers on tap or something local or from further afar on the bottle list, there’s always something worth drinking here, and Richard is happy to go through the beers with you. Sometimes, he even has his own brews pouring. For those not looking for beer, the wine and cider selection is focused and more than an afterthought, with the same attention to quality being given to it as the beer list.
If you’re hungry, Amber Craft Beer offers a small selection of bar snacks, but if you’re looking for something more substantial, you’re more than welcome to grab something or order delivery from one of the many nearby restaurants.
All up, Amber Craft Beer is a great little venue, the kind we love seeing pop up around Melbourne. Just make sure you watch out for the awkwardly placed dart board out the back.
