Anatolia Gozleme Kitchen, Melbourne CBD

MELBOURNE | Anatolia Gozleme Kitchen has been a stalwart for comforting, home-style Turkish food, since opening at Prahran Market in 2012. Last year, the family behind the stall opened a second location, in the heart of the CBD. I took a look for What’s On Melbourne.

The menu is the same as that which regulars of the original will be familiar with. Recipes passed down by family matriarch Jenny, a familiar face to may customers, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Jenny’s legacy lives on through her food, and the warm, friendly service of her extended family who run the shop.

Unsurprisingly, gözleme is a highlight. Dough is made on site daily, and rolled into thin layers with the help of a snazzy new machine. It’s then filled, folded, and cooked over a griddle until flaky and slightly crispy. Fillings include spinach and feta, spinach and lamb, and chicken and mushroom. Served with sumac and mint yoghurt, and Turkish pickles, the gözleme at Anatolia Gozleme Kitchen are great quick and affordable mid-week breakfast or lunch option.

The thicker pastry börek is offered as an alternative to gözleme, with the same filling options, along with an assortment of other traditional dishes. Things like köfte, cabbage sarma, capsicum dolma, salads, and meze. The mixed plate is a great option, giving you a sample of the most popular options. The lamb köfte and potatoes, are particularly excellent.

To drink, you can’t go past a freshly brewed cup of Turkish tea or coffee.
