SAN FRANCISCO | Anchor & Hope is housed in a old mechanics garage that dates back to the early 1900s and is the place to go if you’re looking for some of the best seafood in town. The restaurant makes the most of the building’s bones, with high ceilings, exposed bricks, concrete floors and a garage door – all the warehouse essentials.

This self described “East Coast meets West Coast Fish House” is owned by Doug Washington and Rosenthal brother Mitchell and Steven, and they’ve used their pedigree and experience to create a place that’s one of our favourites. There’s a lot to choose from on the menu, with all of the main seafood options covered. Freshly shucked Washington and Massachusetts oysters are fantastic served raw or as “Angels on horseback”, wrapped with smoked bacon. The lobster roll, served in a pan de mie bun with tater tots and coleslaw is also fantastic. We recommend going for one of the small or large “Seafood Plateaux”, which gives you a mix of oysters, shrimp cocktail, neck clams, crab rémoulade, and ceviche, and if you go “grand”, a whole lobster. There are some non-seafood options on the menu, but that’s not what you’re here for.

Cocktails are light and designed to go well with seafood. The “Ginger Collins”, with Dolin Blanc, a cucumber-mint shrub, ginger, and lime is delicious. The wine list is surprisingly extensive, a features a range of new and old world wines across a wide variety of styles. Beer lovers will also be impressed by the large craft beer list. There are 13 mostly Californian beers on draft, and around 30 bottled beers from across the world to choose from.

The venue is loud, fun, and service is friendly and efficient. A great option whether it’s a full meal you’re after, or just some drinks and snacks.
