AUSTRALIA | You know what it’s like. You’re standing at the tram stop, headphones on, flinching as the chill makes it hard to feel your fingers as you flip that last Pokeball. Now imagine that chill is not just at the tram stop, but everywhere.
Homelessness is a big issue in Australia, and getting bigger by the day, but there is something you can do to help, and all you need to do is buy a cup of coffee.
5 August 2106 is CafeSmart Day, a fundraising initiative of a different kind. For every coffee you buy from a participating cafe, $1.00 will be given to StreetSmart Australia, a charity dedicated to funding projects that tackle homelessness. Sound like a fair deal?
According to StreetSmart Australia, 105,000 people live homeless every night and the need for support services is growing and two out of three people are turned away from accommodation. You can read more about them in our interview with StreetSmart Australia CEO, Adam Robinson. But you don’t need to know the numbers to know this is a good thing.
Find your local participating CafeSmart Day cafe this August 5th using this map. There are also prizes for the best photo on the day using #cafesmart. And if that wasn’t enough, you can even donate on their website.
If you want to help tackle homelessness, a cup of coffee on August 5th is a great place to start.
