LONDON | Banquet of Hoshena is a one-of-a-kind dining concept transports diners into a whimsical kingdom, taking guests on a journey through to the magical realm of Hoshena, where Kings, Queens, fairies and volcanoes come to life on to your table. The pop up, based in Westfield London in Shepherd’s Bush, is brought to London by Dinner Time Stories’ Le Petit Chef. The experience showcases a two-hour show with a five-course meal and mouth-watering cocktails combined with 3D visual technology, image mapping, experiential props and effective storytelling through flavours, ingredients, sights, sounds and tastes.

The experience starts with an introduction from the Queen of Hoshena herself, who tells guests of a once-utopian kingdom that has banished negative emotions, such as anger, sadness and fear and as a result, also removed love, happiness and courage, leaving the land derelict.

The illusory feast starts with some zingy cocktails paired with a flavour to evoke autumn – crunchy mushroom croquettes on a plate which “hovers” on your table. As the story progresses to Hoshena being restored to its glory, each dish and drinks pairing correlates to an emotion. Fear which allows for an interactive element where diners create steamy thrilling cauldrons using liquid nitrogen to depict a foggy and fearful scene. The dish served is a creamy white chickpea broth accompanied with ‘smoky ice cubes’ which light up once immersed in the broth. An fun and favourite element for us within the show.

The second course evokes anger and eruption – a juicy, lightly battered succulent chicken slider in a charcoal bun served on a projected animated ring of fire which adds a brilliant bout of rage to the chapter. The dish is accompanied by three pots of chilli for guests to serve dependent on how ‘angry’ one is feeling. My guest was nursing a recent break up with her boyfriend so you can guess which level of chilli she chose. The main course, which mirrors sadness and nostalgia through water, is encapsulated by a delicately seared salmon nestled in a swamp of cucumber, apple and lime juice sauce, symbolising a lily pad.

The penultimate dish is the desert to convey the emotion of love and there’s no better way to end the story of Hoshena returning back to its once-green kingdom than with a doughy, moreish double chocolate cake, served with chocolate sorbet and garnished with rose petals. Turns out that this delight is also gluten free and vegan.

While tasty, the dishes admittedly aren’t the most palate-inducing but that’s not why you’re here, and he overall experience is executed perfectly. Banquet of Hoshena showcases an alternative new concept of dining and an overall memorable culinary experience in, what I like to call, grown up magic.
