MELBOURNE | Bar SK on Smith Street in Collingwood is one of the most unique bars that we’ve had the pleasure of stumbling across in Melbourne in recent months. It’s been open since September last year, but somehow we’d never noticed it until now, while walking from Foresters Hall up to long time favourite Rockwell & Sons. Walking inside, you’re struck by the in your face eclecticism of the place. There are plenty of Western Australian beers and, when we visited, a feature cocktail named after Ben Cousins. What’s with all the WA references you might ask (as did we).

As it turns out SK originated in Perth, and was based there for three years, while doing a series of pop-ups around Australia. SK (sans bar) is involved in New Media or Playful Media, which basically refers to refer to artistic works in digital or playful mediums. They’ve developed a number of games and interactive media and Bar SK is where they are able to showcase them. From digital to analogue, cute to nasty, innocent to sexual, you’ll never know what is available to play at Bar SK – the offering rotates regularly. Some of what you’ll find is easy to categorise as video games, others not so much. Some of the controllers are easy to categorise as controllers, others not so much. You get the idea. The main thing is that people have fun, and want to interact with the installations, and the other people at the bar.

The whole space is built around this very social aspect and, apart from the games, you have the usual trappings of a bar, namely tasty drinks and a range of seating and standing options. The drinks list, like the installations, are interesting, rotate regularly, and focus on smaller, independent individuals and brands. There are several non-alcoholic options available too for those who want to interact with the art and games and not drink booze.

We’ve done our best to describe what Bar SK is about, but words can only say so much about a place like this. We highly recommend you pay Bar SK a visit – your typical Melbourne bar this is not.
