MELBOURNE | Barry is a cafe in Northcote that focuses on quality over quantity, with options for meat eaters, vegetarians, vegans, and celiacs. The space, designed by Techne Architects, makes use of its north east frontage with floor to ceiling windows creating a light, airy space. Light wood, soft lighting, white walls and dashes of greenery make for a space that’s pleasant even when the cafe is busy, which it often is. Solo diners can sit at the large communal bench, while larger groups have the option of proper tables inside or outside.

The menu, despite being concise, features enough appetising options that it takes a bit of back and forth before finally deciding what you want to order. The menu features a number of interesting takes on the classics along with a good selection of healthy, flavoursome options. As is par for the course these days, everything is sourced locally where possible, with an eye towards seasonality.

For us, the eggs Benedict with slow braised free range ham hock, apple cider hollandaise, apples, and potato hash is a standout. It’s hearty yet light, and the apple cider cuts through the ham beautifully. The confit prawn sub, with wasabi kewpie, pickled kohlrabi, and sesame wasabi salt is another light, tasty option that we love. A crowd favourite which we’re yet to try, but sound delicious, is the crunchy peanut butter, heirloom tomatoes, salt and pepper peanuts on toast.

Coffee is sourced from 5 Senses, and brewed however you like – with a range of filter, espresso and other options on offer. The coconut cold brew is particularly delicious if you’re after something different, while the Synesso espresso machine helps ensure that the espresso based drinks also hit the mark. Tea, blended juices and smoothies, and alcohol (including Bloody Marys of course) are also available.
