MELBOURNE| Benjys is the answer to the question you never knew needed asking – why isn’t there a dog friendly, vegetarian and vegan karaoke bar in Melbourne? For those of you about to groan or sigh, just ask yourself this – do you like fun? Because fun is what Benjis is all about.
Benjis opened a few months ago at the top end of Lygon Street in Brunswick East and after walking past several times during the day we finally popped in with a group of friends one night. Immediately you realise that there’s not an ounce of pretension here. The interior is kind of like a large lounge room – disco balls, vinyl, board games, bright colours, a costume chest, and a the lyrics to whatever song is being played at the time projected on the main wall. A small bar out the back of the space offers a selection of tap and bottled beers, ciders, spirits, cocktails and Australian and New Zealand Wines.
Out the back, a rainbow keyboard painted path leads to a dog-friendly courtyard with seats, benches and tables. It’s heated too, so you can enjoy it during the winter.
For food its a small selection of bar snacks, and if you want something more substantial, you can order in pizza from Coburg’s Stretched Pizza.
As for karaoke, the Benjys team have an app ‘Karafun’, which has over 30,000 songs to choose from ranging from classic favourites to new releases. You simply fill in a slip with the song you want and pass it to the bar staff, who load it up in the queue. There are two mics and its all communal, so everyone can get in on the action.
If you like fun, Benjis is definitely the bar for you. It’s like a late night house party you don’t want to leave.
