Berbeo Bros @ Diesel Bar, Melbourne CBD

MELBOURNE | Diesel Bar is located next to Melbourne Central, in one of Melbourne’s beautiful historic 19th century buildings. I first visited the space back in 2008, with it was the flagship store for clothing band, Diesel. I can only assume that’s where the name of the bar came from. I recently went back for What’s On Melbourne to find out what’s happening at the bar now.

The narrow street frontage hides a surprisingly spacious venue. Downstairs, it’s a long bar and open kitchen on one side, with seating and tables along the other side. It leads to a couch section out the back, and a set of stairs. These stairs lead to another room with a large centre bar, booths, tables, and a pool table. It’s a fun venue, with a more relaxed vibe downstairs and louder party type vibe upstairs.

The food and drinks offering here is a cut above what you might expect at first glance. Earlier this year, the kitchen and bar was taken over on an ongoing basis by Berbeo Bros. The original is one of my favourite spots for Colombian food in Melbourne, and I was excited when I first heard they’d be taking over the kitchen.

Think elevated Colombian street food by executive chef Juan Berbeo and his team, using the best quality local and South American produce. Think empanadas, grilled meat skewers, OTT hot dogs, lechona, and more. For cocktails, there’s the classics, plus Colombian inspired creations like the Aguardente sour.

There’s also shisha available at the bar. It all combines for a great experience.
