MELBOURNE | As the year draws to and end, the time has come for us to put together our list of the best new Melbourne restaurants of 2017. Melbourne has always had a reputation within Australia as one of the best food cities in the world, and 2017 was the year when this reputation really started to spread outside the country’s shores, most notably when the world’s best chefs gathered in the city for the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards.
2017’s restaurant openings catered to diverse range of desires, with a notable movement away from trends and towards food that draws upon the background and family of those cooking it, and regional specialties. From modern Malaysian (Merah) to trendy Vietnamese (HOMI Noodle Bar), established restaurateurs breaking away from the theme of their other venues (Kisume) and places fusing a bit of everything to great effect (Above Board), there was no shortage of new places where diners could eat good quality versions of whatever they felt like.
Particularly noticeable was the expansion and refinement of various Asian cuisines. A new generation of restaurateurs are taking family recipes, tradition, and the food they grew up with, and putting their own spin on it. There’s certainly never been a better time to be eating Asian food in Melbourne.
With so many great new restaurants opening in 2017 it was hard whittling them all down to a list of the best but eventually we got there. Here are, in our opinion, the best new Melbourne restaurants of 2017. Have you been to them all? What are you favourite new Melbourne restaurants of 2017?
Make sure you check out our best new Melbourne cafes and best new Melbourne bars too.
