MELBOURNE | Biggie Smalls Kbabs is one of our favourite spots for a kebab, be it the Collingwood original or the food truck which pops up all over Melbourne. There’s now a second physical location at the Windsor end of Chapel Street, which pumps out Shane Delia’s kebabs with a twist that we’ve become used to, along with a few location-specific creations. We were invited to the launch to check it out.

Step inside and the New York diner style aesthetic of the original is still very much present, but with more of a night time bar twist. The lights are lower, and there’s a Yamaha Audio Visual system to take care of the old school hip-hop and R&B beats. The bar angle goes hand in hand with the expanded drinks menu, which includes beer on tap by new Melbourne brewery Brick Lane Brewing Co, which Delia partially owns, and made-to-order cocktails influenced by Middle Eastern flavours. Try the “Back to the Bridge”, tequila spiked with pomegranate liqueur, Cointreau and sumac salt. There are also a few shakes, which can be made boozy for $4 extra.

Of course, this is a kebab shop at its core, and just like the original it’s all about quality ingredients and modern Middle Eastern twists on the humble kebab. Many of our favourite Biggie Smalls kebabs are on the menu at the Windsor location, including the “Dirty South” with fried chicken, lettuce, pickled onions, galic and lemon aioli. Of the new kebabs, our favourite is the “ODB Wrap”, a dumpling kebab cross filled with pork and prawn siu mai, hoisin mayo, pickled ginger slaw and chilli jam. Bar snacks include things like mac & cheese balls, loaded smoked hummus, and corn doggs with Turkish sausage (sujuk).

The Windsor Biggie Smalls takes all the things we love about the Collingwood original, and adds even more reasons to visit with the expanded bar and drinks menu. It takes what we like about the old school and adds a fresh spin to things without losing what makes it good. Success!
