MELBOURNE | Billy Van Creamery Fitzroy North is one of the easiest things to write about. Tasty, artisinal gelato created using quality, locally sourced ingredients. It’s really that simple. Brothers Alex and Mitch Wells started the business as a food truck at the end of 2014 and by the end of 2015 they popped up in this physical location. The lease was due to expire in March but it’s been extended so along with the food truck, which changes locations, you still have this permanent spot in Fitzroy North from which to get your gelato fix.

Flavours are simple and characterised by the fact that, due to the quality of ingredients used, they actually taste like they are supposed to. Flavours like hazelnut, chocolate and salted caramel are always on the menu, while special rotating flavours like matcha and apple & cinnamon can also be found. Each flavour uses only 5 ingredients – the base flavour e.g. chocolate or banana, Demeter milk, cane sugar, cream and an egg-yolk stabiliser. Where possible, organic ingredients are used. The result is fantastic tasting, creamy gelato, just the way it should be.

There’s also filter coffee (hot or cold drip) on offer for those of you who need a caffeine hit.

Paul founded The City Lane back in 2009 as a place to share photos of his travels around Europe with friends and family. The City Lane might have changed quite a lot since those early days but one thing that’s remained constant is Paul’s passion for food, travel and culture, and a desire to photograph and write about his experiences. Paul has a strong inquisitive nature that drives him to look beneath the surface in order to discover what really makes a city and its people tick, and what better way to do this than over a good meal or drink, with a city’s locals, at places that people who live in that city actually frequent. Paul is also a co-host of The Brunswick Beer Collective, a podcast that may or may not actually be about beer.
